APUDUI is continuing its remarkable work in assisting the Urban Community of Annaba in Algeria in establishing an urban planning and development agency (Agence d’Urbanisme et de Développement Intercommunal de la Wilaya d’Annaba – AUDICA).
AUDICA was formally established in April 2009 and since then no less than 5 capacity development and exchange activities have taken place in Annaba and Dunkerque and led to the successful launch of the GIS Division within AUDICA as well as a number of technical exchange and diagnosis activities.
The most recent activities were the public consultation on “Observatories: A Decision Making Tool” which was held in October 2009 in Annaba and the seminar “Reciprocal perspectives in Urban Planning: Dunkerque, Annaba/Algiers, Dunkerque” which was held in November 2009.  APUDUI has been witnessing a new dynamic start since July 2008. This dynamism was confirmed by the appointment in February 2009 of a dedicated Project Coordinator based at the Urban Development Agency of the Flandres-Dunkerque region (AGUR).
No less than 6 missions were carried to Annaba, Bizerte and Dunkerque over the past 7 months, Including a visit of the President of the Urban Community of Dunkerque to Annaba in November 2008 and an 8 person delegation from Annaba visiting Dunkerque in December 2008.
The main achievement of the project so far was the creation of an Urban Development Agency in Annaba (Agence d’Urbanisme et de Développement Integre de la Commune d’Annaba AUDICA) which became operational in March 2009. A technical working group from Dunkerque met with AUDICA on March 8-12 and a capacity building seminar on GIS applications to Urban Development is planned during the third week of April.
The work is picking up a new momentum with Bizerte – Tunisia who is an Associated partner to the project, and a technical and political delegation from Dunkerque visited Bizerte on April 20-22 in order to agree on the next steps regarding the role of Bizerte in APUDUI and with 3 technicians from the Municipality of Bizerte attending the GIS seminar in Annaba in April.
