SHAMS has completed most of its planned activities in Tunisia and Morocco and is planning to finish its activities in Bosra – Syria by June 2010. The project intends to establish a local development agency for Bosra together with a visitor and information center. SHAMS is also contributing to the rehabilitation of a traditional house situated right next to the Roman Amphitheater which will ultimately serve as a bed and breakfast hotel.

Dissemination events in Sousse and Mahdia

From 4 - 8 August, the coordinator of the SHAMS project, Mrs Dewulf from Bruxelles, will participate in the major dissemination events of the partner cities in Tunisia, Sousse and Mahdia.

Sousse will hold a concluding event of its pilot project - a selective door-to-door collection of packaging waste for 5000 inhabitants or 1200 households including an intensive sensibilisation and communication campaign - with recommednations on economic, ecological and institutional aspects. The latter are very important as Sousse has  the intention to deliver these recommendations to the national authorities for waste management (ANGED).

Mahdia we will be holding "journées portes ouvertes", which will give inhabitants the possibility to visit the composting site, and see for themselves how easy small scale composting can be.

An expert delegation from the Municipality of Rome visited the city of Bosra during the first week of April to resume the activities of SHAMS which were idle over the past period due to successive administrative changes in both Bosra and Rome. The Delegation included Ms Lucrezia Ungaro (Senior expert for the Management of Archaeological areas), Mr. Giuseppe Campagna (Technical Assistance), Ms. Francesca Agostini (administration and finances) as well as two Italian experts in culture and heritage tourism development.

Prof Oqba Faroush from the Damascus University was recruited as local coordinator and will oversee the activities aiming at transforming part of a traditional 18th century Mansion in the historic city center of Bosra (Would Heritage Site) into a Bed and Breakfast facility and the other part into the headquarters of the Local Development Office (LDO) which SHAMS has established within the Bosra Municipality.

The Delegation met the Governor of the Dara’a Region which reiterated the support of the Syrian Government to SHAMS and informed the Delegation that a special committee for the rehabilitation of Old Bosra has been created within the Governorate.

The visit was also a privilege occasion to conduct field work and to collect data that will enable the Team to finalize a comprehensive plan for tourism development in Bosra.
