theSTREAM CITIES is back on track, and the unfolding of the project is detailed on the website of the project (www.streamcities.eu). The annual Steering Committee meeting for STREAM CITIES was held in Reggio Emilia September 27-29, 2009 in parallel to a training on territorial diagnosis tools for the MEDA partners. The training was immediately followed by a technical exchange visit to Valencia for the MEDA partners on October 1-2, 2009. All partners are currently engaged in the preparation of their participatory territorial diagnosis and analysis which focuses mainly on environment and sustainable tourism with backstopping and technical assistance by the ReCS network (Rete delle Città Strategiche) which brings together some 20 European “Champions” in urban regeneration in order to share and mainstream their experiences .
Ms Anna Meo from ReCS network visited Fez on Nov 12-13 2009 in order to monitor the project and help the city in its implementation. Fez is still at a preliminary phase, also due to political changes and financial hindrances in receiving and managing EU co-financing. Ms Meo met institutional, cultural and economic representatives but could not hold a joint meeting of all the actors involved. What clearly emerged is the need of improving craftmanship and bettr promoting the suk, the market.
Mr Giorgio Pagano from ReCS network visited Bethlehem on Nov 26-27 2009 in order to provide additional support in the territorial diagnosis and implementation. He met and worked with both the institutional and administrative levels engaged in the project. Mr Pagano closely examined the Plan, from the point of view of the vision (already well defined and divided into priority lines), of the concrete actions and projects. Meetings and visits to the local institutions and stakeholders were also held, and they clearly showed the improvement in the cooperation between the Administration and civil society.
Mr. Paolo Ortelli from ReCS network visited El Mina on Dec 4-5 2009 in order to provide additional backstopping in the preparation of the territorial diagnosis. Mr, Ortelli worked closely with the local expert group of STREAM CITIES in El Mina, and gave a public presentation in the Town Hall about the project during which he highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships and policy reforms as essential accompanying measures for the success of any intended strategic plan.
Bethlehem: A delegation from the City of Catania, Leader of Partnership in STREAM CITIES project visited Bethlehem April 25-26, 2009. The Delegation was composed of Mr. Corrado Persico, Director General of the Municipality of Catania, Mr. Davide Crimi, project manager of STEAM CITIES and Ms. Mirella Collerone.
The Delegation was received on April 25th by the Mayor of Bethlehem Mr. Victor Batarseh, the Director General of the Municipality Mr. Tony Marcos and Steam Cities Focal Points in Bethlehem Mr. Khalil Shokeh and Ms. Dina Nassar. The meeting was an occasion to re-affirm the commitment of the Municipality of Catania to Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in general and to the STREAM CITIES project in particular and to discuss with Bethlehem STREAM’s methodology for information sharing and collaborative planning around sustainable urban management themes. The two parties agreed to focus the STREAM CITIES approach in Bethlehem on sustainable tourism for local economic development and in creating a joint sharing and social learning platform inspired from the common historical roots that made the paths of Bethlehem and Catania cross repeatedly across centuries.
The Catania Delegation also visited Mr. Athanasios Frangos, Programme Officer in charge of STEAM CITIES at the EC Technical Assistance Office (ECTAO) in Jerusalem. Mr. Frangos – who has constantly supported STREAM CITIES since its initiation – further discussed the technical and administrative aspects of the project with the Catania Delegation.
The European partners of STREAM CITIES in partnership with the MEDA partners (Bethlehem but also the Municipality of Fez – Morocco and the Municipality of El Mina – Lebanon) is a concrete example on the multiple opportunities that Euro-Mediterranean partnership can offer. The project is offering concrete opportunities and entry points for improving relational tourism based on common roots between the participating cities.
