The ARCHIMEDES project (Actions to Regenerate Cities and Help Innovative Mediterranean Economic Development Enhancing Sustainability) is coming to an end in December 2008. Credit goes to the project for being one of the few MED-PACT projects to have fulfilled their initially planned calendar of activities despite the numerous problems that the project faced but which were addressed in a professional, efficient and timely manner. The project will be holding its exit workshop in Beirut on November 17th and 18th, 2008 and is considering publishing a book which looks retrospectively at the project and its outputs.
The Municipality of Sin El Fil, who is partner in the PAMLED project as well Mr. Sebastien Debaumont from the APPUDUI project will attend this meeting as observers.
The Municipality of Venice (Italy) and the project partners are already contemplating the possibility of submitting an ARCHMEDES II project within the framework of ENPI CIUDAD Cooperation in Urban Development and Dialogue, which can be considered as the successor of MED-PACT and its predecessor MED’ACT)
The ARCHIMEDES Final Conference will be held in Beirut on Tuesday 18th of November 2008. The Conference will be a very important event for the presentation of the project results and outputs, in particular related to the 4 pilot projects elaborated by Beirut, Istanbul, El Mina and Oran.
This last meeting, after two year of intense work and fruitful cooperation among Local Authorities, will as well be an occasion for discussing and presenting new way of collaboration within 2007-13 programming period.
The next Archimedes transnational meeting will be held in Oran on 30th June - 1st July. Recently the cities of Oran, Istanbul, Beirut and El Mina received technical visits from their EU partner cities. The four MEDA cities are working on the finalisation of the pilot projects, which will be presented in Oran.
In october 2007, 7 students and 7 professors of architecture in Oran (Algeria) attended a 20 days training on buildings restoration and sculpture, in the framework of the Archimedes activities. This training is essential for the restoration of old façades in the old city centre (Sidi El Houari). A video of this training has been made and can be downloaded from our Document Repository section.
The third transnational meeting, initially planned in El Mina, had to be moved to Italy and was held in Venice on 6th and 7th December 2007.
The first day was dedicated to the presentation of the first conclusions on the Thematic Working Groups. It was agreed that these activities will go further ahead in 2008.
The 4 MEDA partners then presented the Action Plan proposed for their Pilot Project. The excellent work achieved over the last months allowed a productive discussion among the partners and to learn from each others' experiences.
The second day started with a presentation on the funds for pilot projects, which the partners wish to discuss further in 2008. This presentation was kindly produced by Dott. L. Ferrarese from Euris. Lastly, after a study visit to the incubators in Giudecca Island, the third Steering Committee was held with all partners.
